Public transit a winner at the polls

Funding for public transit was a big winner at the ballot box on Tuesday. According to the American Public Transportation Association, voters in 14 states approved 22 measures out of 30 state and local public transportation-related ballot initiatives, amounting to a 73-percent rate of approval. In total, nearly $500 million was authorized for the next five years. APTA President William Millar said in a statement that despite the impact of the downturn in the economy, Americans went to the polls to improve or initiate public transportation, “even though it means additional local or state taxes.” For more, visit www.apta.com.
