Tucson receives grant for new buses

The U.S. Department of Transportation has presented the city of Tucson with a $5 million grant to replace about ten bio-diesel buses with vehicles utilizing hybrid technology. The latest money comes just days after another $5 million grant was award to Tucson from DOT’s State of Good Repair program to replace approximately 15 buses. The Regional Transportation Authority will provide local matching funds of up to 20 percent for the project. The money became available through DOT under the Federal Transit Administration’s Clean Fuels Bus and Facilities Program. The program sets ozone and carbon emission standards and supports clean technologies for transit buses. The money includes funds to expand Sun Tran’s fleet and replace older vehicles. Delivery is expected to occur in about 18 months. For more, visit www.suntran.com.
