Volvo Powertrain begins I-Shift assembly in United States

The Volvo Group’s Powertrain plant in Hagerstown, MD, began assembly of the Volvo I-Shift transmission with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in August. Employees were accompanied by Volvo Group executives, state and local dignitaries, and members of the press.

Volvo I-Shift is a 12-speed, two-pedal, lightweight automated manual transmission (AMT) that delivers an exceptional level of productivity by simultaneously maximizing comfort, safety and fuel efficiency. I-Shift is designed to integrate seamlessly with Volvo engines and provides the motorcoach industry’s only integrated powertrain.

“This project represents a significant investment in the Hagerstown plant, brings an infusion of new jobs to the economy, and illustrates the pride this region has in manufacturing an integral component of the truck and motorcoach industry,” said Dann Wiltgen, Prevost vice-president of Key Accounts.

A time-lapsed video of the entire assembly process was played before the ribbon-cutting, and the ceremony included special recognition of the project team leaders and members. The afternoon continued with celebration, reflections, and refreshments.

“Prevost will be a better, stronger company as a result of having the availability of a transmission manufactured here in Hagerstown,” said Wiltgen.

  1. North American engineered & built buses and coaches have always been far superior to European offerings, in terms of quality and engineering. Plus the key features of ease of maintenance, longevity and durability.

North American products have always been a threat to Euro vehicle builders. One way to tackle that threat is to buy a North American manufacturer, start phasing out the North American proven componentry and start installing Euro componentry with no alternate choice of componentry. Basically, operators end up with a Euro vehicle. Something they did not want in the first place.

This drives long term and prospective buyers to purchase the products from opposition coach builders who adhere to the
    North American proven engineering formula.
