A proposal to build a three-mile trolley line from downtown Spokane and running to Gonzaga University has both supporters and naysayers. According to KXLY News, city officials and the Spokane Transit Authority are discussing the trolley idea, which would cost an estimated $36 million.
The Spokane Transit Authority is considering a proposal for an electric streetcar or trolley line for service through downtown and from Browne’s Addition to Gonzaga University. Currently, about 142,000 daily trips occur along the corridor. Previous proposals have a trolley running about every 10 to 15 minutes.
The sticking point for critics is the cost, which the consider too much. Others who support the measure say a trolley would be a cleaner-running vehicle and would make transportation more interesting for residents. If approved the measure would not be on a ballot until 2013.
