Survey: Illegal school bus passes alarming

A survey by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services reveals more than 76,000 vehicles illegally passed school buses in one day this spring over 28 states. Just under 112,000 school buses were studied in the survey, accounting for about 24 percent of all U.S. school buses. Bus drivers reported more than 37,700 stop-arm passing incidents. The NASDPTS reports that during a typical 180-day school year there are more than 13 million illegal school bus passes.

Mike Simmons, President of NASDPTS said: “Others who are not already familiar with how often illegal passes occur will view these numbers as alarming. We hope these results trigger more safety countermeasures within states and at the national level, including greater motorist awareness, greater enforcement, and tougher, more uniform laws.”
