Proposal made for Birmingham Explorer

A proposal by the mayor of Birmingham, AL could create a tourist transit system for “The Magic City.” Mayor William Bell says the new system, which would be called the “Birmingham Explorer,” would transport visitors to downtown hotels and attractions in addition to the zoo, Vulcan Park and the botanical gardens. According to The Birmingham News, a pilot program could begin within months if approved by the city council.

Birmingham officials have a number of similar programs to pattern from; Louisville, Memphis and Chattanooga have special tourist transit systems that have been a welcome boon to those cities. Birmingham’s current DART system does carry passengers to tourist attractions, but service is limited.
