INIT, Sacramento partner for electronic fare collection system

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments has contracted INIT Innovations in Transportation to install a new electronic fare collection system for about 500 of the agencies’ buses and at rail station platform locations. The state-of-the-art electronic collection system features smartcard passenger terminals, Add Fare Machines, GPS-enabled onboard computers, customer service workstations, retail sales terminals and a back-office fare management system for the Council’s new Connect Transit Card System.

Passengers will tap their fare cards when boarding buses, which will automatically debit the fare for each ride. Customers will be able to easily purchase or top up smartcards at 42 locations throughout the region.

INIT’s system is meant to increase efficiency for SACOG’s transit system and on-time performance by reducing boarding times at stops, and will streamline work for SACOG.
