Free transit rides could be remedy for LA’s 'Carmageddon'

To ease the certain gridlock that will come with the two-day closing of one of Los Angeles’ busiest freeways, LA Metro will be offering free rides for customers on 26 bus lines. On July 15-16 the 405 Freeway that connects west Los Angeles with the San Fernando Valley will be closed for a $1 billion widening project. The impending closure has been dubbed “Carmageddon.” An estimated 500,000 vehicles use the freeway on a typical summer weekend. The 405 roadway is one of the busiest in the U.S.

LA Metro will add 61 buses to eight major bus lines, including two which will link Pacific Palisades along Sunset Boulevard and rapid buses going to Santa Monica along Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards. The agency will also add 16 vehicles to last night service on other routes.
