New York City’s George Washington Bridge Bus Station is set for a well-needed makeover, thanks to approximately $180 million dollars through a public-private partnership. According to The Record, the facelift project is scheduled to be completed by late 2013. One private investor put in $100 million for the renovation.
The New York Port Authority hopes the revamped station will become not only a transit point, but a local shopping area for commuters and neighborhood residents. Transit users will experience a nicer waiting room and the number of gates increased from 17 to 21.
According to the Port Authority website, about 17,000 passengers on about 950 buses use the station on a typical weekday. The station opened in January 1963.
