The United Motorcoach Association (UMA) says it applauds Congressmen Steve Daines (R-MT) and Sam Graves (R-MO) and their staffs on introduction and passage of their amendment to block a regulation to increase the minimum insurance requirements for truck and bus companies.
In April of this year, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released a study mandated by MAP-21 that made recommendations on massive increases to current minimum levels of financial responsibility for commercial motor vehicle carriers.

According to UMA, the study fails to properly evaluate passenger carrier data.
“Additionally, FMCSA fails to make any substantive connection with higher minimum insurance limits and improving safety,” said Ken Presley, UMA’s vice president of industry relations and COO.
FMCSA announced its plans to pursue a high priority rulemaking proceeding to increase insurance limits shortly after the release of the study.
“UMA thanks Congressmen Daines and Graves for their leadership on this issue of great importance to the bus and motorcoach industry,” said UMA’s President & CEO Victor Parra. “When enacted into law, the amendment introduced by Congressmen Daines and Graves will stop FMCSA from pursuing massive increases that would harm new entrant and small fleet passenger carriers and most assuredly reduce safety by pushing people towards less safe modes of transportation.”
