Robbery suspect falls asleep on Madison Metro bus

Crime does not pay — and apparently it makes one sleepy, too.

Madison, WI police arrested 36-year-old suspected armed robber Gerald Hopewell last week while he was fast asleep on a Metro bus. Police say the victim accused Hopewell of selling him fake marijuana near a bus stop. When a Metro bus happened by, Hopewell and the victim boarded the bus. The victim claims Hopewell then pointed a handgun at him and demanded more money.

Police say Hopewell fell asleep, eventually passing out while leaning on the left arm of the alleged victim. The 33-year-old victim then decided to pull the cord, get off the bus and call authorities. During a search police found a .357 magnum gun in Hopewell’s backpack. He’s been charged with Armed Robbery, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Disorderly Conduct and Imitation Controlled Substances.
