Paper: NHTSA undercounted motorcoach deaths

According to USA Today, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has undercounted the number of motorcoach fatalities. After a review of federal accident data, news reports and talking to local law enforcement, the paper discovered at least 14 accidents and 32 motocoach occupant deaths not included in an NHTSA tally of motorocoach crashes from 2003 to 2009.

The NHTSA calculates motorcoach fatalities on the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which holds the records of every fatal crash in the U.S. Although there is no official definition for motorcoach, the NHTSA looks at a category known as Cross Country/Intercity Bus. Motorcoaches can sometimes be listed under other categories.
