Cell phone use restricted on NM school buses

Student Transportation Services of New Mexico is following the lead of the Las Cruces Public School district by banning cell phone use on buses unless there is an emergency. According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, parents complained last year that students were taking photos of each other, with some ending up on Facebook. A number of fights occurred on school buses because of cell phones. Also, officials cited safety concerns related to cell phone use. If students use a phone on the bus the driver can confiscate the phone and hold it for parents to pick up later. With continued use, students face suspensions ranging from one to eight days.
