$776 million earmarked for urban and rural bus systems

A combined $776 million in federal funds is being earmarked for urban and rural transit providers in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood made the announcement last week in Washington. Money from the so-called State of Good Repair Grant Program will help bring buses, bus facilities and related equipment up to standards. According to the Federal Transit Administration, more than 40 percent of the nation’s buses are in poor to marginal condition. The funds come after a Department of Transportation study earlier this year that estimated the cost of returning the nation’s rail and bus transit systems to good repair is close to $78 billion.
