Coast Mountain bus drivers for Metro Vancouver are calling for more police on coaches. According to the Vancouver Sun, union officials for Canadian Auto Workers Local 111 are also calling for harsher punishments for individuals who attack bus drivers. The Sun reports that over the past year 150 assaults have been reported on bus drivers, with many linked to fare evasion.
While drivers are encouraged to not confront passengers who do not pay, the transit agency claims a $5.3 million in lost fares due to people refusing to pay for the ride. In two years the agency will have a prepaid card system for customers to use.
