SunLine Transit’s annual “Fill the Bus” holiday food drive on Nov. 17 collected 10.5 tons of food and toiletries and more than 100 turkeys for three organizations. The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, The Galilee Center in Thermal, CA and the Soup Kitchen in Desert Hot Springs are the organizations benefiting from SunLine’s program.
Last Thursday SunLine parked its state-of-the-art alternative-fueled buses at four grocery store locations across California’s Coachella Valley, inviting local citizens and shoppers to come out and fill each vehicle with donated, non-perishable items. The 40-foot buses accommodated packaged items of any size or shape – in addition to dry, canned goods, frozen meats and other assorted trimmings.
SunLine Transit Agency is a joint powers authority formed in 1977 to operate the Coachella Valley’s public transportation system. Its vehicles travel more than 21 million passenger miles per year, covering 536 bus stops located throughout a 1,120 mile-service area.
