Media attention to the firing of a Nassau County, New York bus driver is fueling sympathy for him and criticism of the bus company who terminated him.
On Wednesday, Nassau County school bus driver George Daw was let go for violated policy for picking up passengers — who just happened to be three Nassau County detectives who had were stranded in waist-deep floodwater after a freakish hail storm hit the area last week. Various news agencies report that private Educational Bus Company, based in Copiague, NY, insists Daw still broke the rule and claims picking up others endangered the one child who was on the bus at the time.
After the incident Daw filled out an incident report; the company later filled out his walking papers. Since being fired Daw has received praise and well-wishes from many for coming to the aid of the officers.
Educational Bus Transport is a private company categorized under Buses-Charter and Rental. Current estimates show the company has an annual revenue of $20 to 50 million and employs a staff of approximately 250 to 499.
