The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and its state and local law enforcement partners conducted more than 2,700 surprise Strike Force passenger carrier safety inspections over a nine-day period from March 28 to April 6. The result was 289 unsafe buses or drivers being removed from the roadways. The enforcement issued out-of-service violation citations to 156 drivers and 262 vehicles. U.S. transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the inspection results which are an ongoing effort to strengthen carrier safety nationwide.
Between March 12 and March 28, an estimated 3,000 passenger carrier inspections netted 300 vehicles being put out of service during the 17-day timeframe. The FMCSA has significantly increased the number of safety inspections and compliance reviews the agency conducts on the nation’s estimated 3,700 registered motor coach companies.
