SC Governor applauded for bus privatization support
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has been commended by the National School Transportation Association for her support in using private companies to meet school bus needs in the Palmetto State. In her first State of the State address, Governor Haley suggested lawmakers help alleviate the state’s budget by allowing school bus contracting. South Carolina currently has the dubious honor of having the oldest fleet in the nation. The NSTA supports Governor Haley, believing school bus contracting saves state and local dollars and allows education professionals to focus on students’ needs. Recent studies suggest that private companies can save up to 25 percent of student transportation costs, often by employing the same drivers and replacing aging fleets.
